PepsiCo has recently announced the removal of aspartame from Diet Pepsi against a backdrop of falling sales and consumer safety concerns.
As reported by USA Today, an aspartame-free Diet Pepsi “sweetened with sucralose and ace-K” will be available for consumers from August. The source also reports PepsiCo as saying that the new Diet Pepsi “tastes the same as the old one”, while large lettering on the packaging will make it clear that it is now aspartame free.
According to PepsiCo SVP Seth Kaufman: “We’re listening to consumers. To Diet Pepsi consumers, removing aspartame is their No. 1 one concern. Pepsi could no longer afford to sit back and simply watch its Diet Pepsi sales keep falling”.
The change is said to affect all varieties of Diet Pepsi including Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry.
