The latest innovation insight from Gama Compass

MANCHESTER – 29th June 2017: This month’s Innovation Insight looks at how packaged salad manufacturers are adapting to the new ways that consumers are incorporating ‘healthy’ ingredients into their diet. Under the microscope is a new line that positions salad leaves as an ingredient to be blended into health drinks, rather than eaten whole – Florette Smoothie Mix Salad.

Capitalizing on a boom in home-prepared, ‘superfood’ smoothies, salad specialist Florette has unveiled a new generation of its bagged salad leaves that are specifically designed for blending. Launched in the UK, Florette Smoothie Mix Salad is “designed to be the delicious and nutritional heart of your smoothie which comes to life in the presence of your favourite flavours”, with consumers instructed to blend the assortment of leaves together with fruit of their choice.

Florette Smoothie Mix Salad points to the opportunities and threats facing fruit and vegetable manufacturers. As ‘quick-to-prepare’, ‘easy-to-consume‘ and ‘professional nutrition’ become embedded in the mainstream, producers need to keep pace through continued adaptations to their product lines. With the focus switching from ‘salad-as-food’ to ‘salad-as-nutrition’, there will be a need for more versatile solutions that enable consumers to easily incorporate fruit, salad and vegetable ingredients into their overall dietary regime, prioritising nutritional value and convenience benefits.
