Gama spoke to Ian Wright MBE, Director General, Food and Drink Federation.

What key trends do you expect to shape food and drinks innovation in the UK in 2017?

Healthy eating will remain a key trend this year and I believe we’ll continue to see popular products reformulated with reduced sugar and calorie content. This, I believe, will be alongside the launch of more plant-based functional foods and products that support a fitness-focussed lifestyle. I also think we will see reduced portion sizes, with manufacturers helping consumers to reduce calorie intake and minimise food waste. As companies begin to meet the limits of what is technically possible in sugar and calorie reduction, portion reduction is inevitable, indeed in some categories it’s essential.
