Cream cheese innovation looks to the skyr

The latest innovation insight from Gama Compass

MANCHESTER – 20th July 2018: For this month’s Innovation Insight we turn our attention to the dynamics of the yoghurt category, and in particular the growth of the skyr segment, as we cast an eye over a new fresh cheese launch from Arla in the USA – Arla Skyr Cream Cheese Spread.

Marketed as having a “rich, tangy flavour”, Arla Skyr Cream Cheese Spread is a new twist on classic cream cheese that makes use of the fashionable Icelandic-inspired yoghurt skyr to boost its nutrition credentials and align to modern dietary preferences. The buttermilk-based product “starts with the classic Arla cream cheese recipe and introduces skyr […] into the mix”, according to a company description of the product, resulting in a product “that’s naturally higher in protein and lower in sugar and fat than our Original Cream Cheese”. Suggested uses for the product include “everything from bagels to bran muffins” as well as with fruit “for a simple, quality snack”.

With Arla Skyr Cream Cheese Spread, Arla is leveraging a fashionable ingredient to reinvigorate a traditional product. With the novelty of Greek yoghurt perhaps now wearing off, skyr could be primed to step in and fill the gap, as companies look for new and distinctive ways to embed high-protein benefits, thicker textures and mild, creamy yoghurt flavours in their latest product offerings.
