Unilever, the multinational consumer goods giant, has announced plans to close its ice cream facility in Bulgaria and move part of the production to Romania.
The closure comes after Unilever announced plans to spin off its ice-cream division, which generates nearly €8 billion ($8.3 billion) in annual sales, by the end of the year.
“This move aims to facilitate production synergies and ensure sustainable development for the long term”, a Unilever spokesperson is quoted as saying. “The variety of products for Bulgarian consumers will remain unchanged, and Unilever will continue to invest in the region, providing favourite products and making a positive societal impact”
Unilever has had a manufacturing facility presence in Romania since its acquisition of Betty Ice. Last year, the company announced it had invested over €12 million ($12.4 million) over four years to upgrade the facility.
