The latest innovation insight from Gama Compass™
MANCHESTER – 17th October 2014: In the innovation spotlight this week is a health drink tapping into the growing popularity of savoury flavours. New from Pacific Foods in the USA, Pacific Organic Bone Broth is a product designed to be “sipped by the cup” as “a delicious, satisfying addition to your everyday routine”.
Bone broths as a drink have undergone something of a recent revival, particularly with the surge of interest in ‘paleolithic’ diets. For their advocates, they offer a diverse range of health benefits, from high levels of protein and amino acids to the presence of collagen, a skin-enhancing ingredient that occurs naturally in the gelatine found in meat bones.
Aside from nutritional benefits, Pacific Organic Bone Broth also highlights the development of a small but interesting new segment in non-alcoholic drinks – savoury hot teas. 2012 saw the launch of Millie’s Savoury Teas, ‘sipping broths’ that blend green tea with savoury flavours such as tomato & basil and Indian spice, while in 2013 Numi launched an organic tea ranging combining “real organic vegetables, wild herbs, decaf tea and aromatic spices”.
The key to success for ‘savoury teas’ and ‘sipping broths’ could be the concept of comfort. Together with nutritional benefits, warmth and comfort could give these products the edge over standard health drinks, allowing them to be marketed as an all-round solution to wellbeing needs.
