Multinational tobacco firm British American Tobacco has announced the opening of a new innovation hub in the Italian city of Trieste focusing on “new category” products such as e-cigarettes, novel oral nicotine and heated tobacco.
In a press release, BAT said the hub would include laboratories, production offices, technical rooms, 12 production lines for new category products, a digital boutique and innovation lab, and was aligned with its efforts to reduce the health impact of the business.
Commenting on the move, Fabio de Petris, CEO of BAT Italy, said: “The completion of the Trieste Innovation Hub marks a milestone in BAT’s global strategy for innovation and sustainability. I am proud that BAT is the first company in the industry to distribute its full range of new category products. The Hub represents a significant contribution to the country’s employment and economic growth”.
The new site will create approximately 2,700 direct jobs and 2,100 indirect jobs, and was designed according to advanced sustainability criteria, using 100% energy from renewable sources, with the target to be certified carbon neutral in 2024.
