German dairy firm Muller has announced plans to close its dairy plant in Cologne, Germany with the reported loss of up to 220 jobs.
The company blamed a decision by regulators to require it to divest the Tuffi brand as part of its wider acquisition of FrieslandCampina’s portfolio in Germany.
“Conditions imposed by the Bundeskartellamt prevent continued economic operation [of the factory]”, Muller said in a statement.
The plant is expected to finally shut its doors in October of this year.
“Closing the factory will be a bitter moment, not only because we are fully behind the takeover despite the conditions, but also because we have found the team in Cologne to be well established and motivated”, added Marcus Almeling, chief financial officer at Muller. “We hope we will be able to inspire them to move to one of our other plants”.
