Bel, the leading cheese firm, has announced the construction of its first plant in Canada fully dedicated to the production of Mini Babybel cheese.
The facility, which is scheduled to begin commercial production in early 2020, represents an investment of $66.1 million and will create 170 jobs.
Located in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, the new plant is said to be aligned with Bel’s strategy of prioritizing local manufacturing to bolster growth in the Canadian market. It already produces its Boursin and The Laughing Cow branded cheese within Canada via subcontracting partnership agreements with local dairy processors.
In a statement, Bel Canada president Catherine Thomas said: “Bel has been marketing its products in Canada since 1957, and we know the local dairy sector’s expertise. With this new plant, we are becoming a full-fledged Quebec dairy processor”.
