Supermarket chain Lidl has announced that it plans to open 23 new stores in Belgium by the end of February 2022.
According to a press release from the retailer, new stores have already opened in Zottegem and Virton, with four more set to open in Retie, Beaumont, Aubange, and Tongeren later in February.
Lidl also said it planned to remodel nine stores in Belgian cities and to relocate 10 stores as part of an expansion strategy to open larger outlets with more light and fresh locally sourced products.
Lidl spokesperson Isabelle Colbrandt said: “We pay extra attention to local products. The Belgian consumer appreciates this. Half of our fruit and vegetables and 90% of our meat come from Belgium. 100% of our milk and eggs come from our country”.
The expansion plan will also generate 500 new jobs by the end of 2022, the firm said.
