Carlsberg Britvic has proposed closing Marston’s Brewery in Burton upon Trent, alongside its primary logistics operation, by the summer of 2027. According to the company, the proposal is driven by structural category decline and a need to create greater long-term value.
While certain priority ale brands, including Hobgoblin, McEwan’s and Brooklyn, will remain in the company’s multi-beverage portfolio, Carlsberg Britvic is seeking new homes for other cask and regional ale brands.
Operating since 1834 and located at the Albion Brewery on Shobnall Road since 1898, Marston’s is the oldest brewer in town, utilizing mineral-rich water filtered through local gypsum layers.
Commenting on the news, Paul Davies, CEO at Carlsberg Britvic, said: “While we remain proud of the role we have played in supporting and investing in the ale category overall, the stark reality is that UK cask ale volumes have more than halved in less than a decade, and this trend looks set to continue across the UK”.
Marston’s Brewery and the primary logistics operation are expected to continue to operate during the transition period.
