Jealsa, the Spanish seafood producer, has collaborated with food packaging specialist Tetra Pak to launch what they claim is the industry’s first carton packaging for shelf-stable tuna. The innovation debuted last month in Sweden with retailer Axfood in a 200ml format, representing a paper-based alternative to traditional round cans.
According to the companies, the rectangular Tetra Recart packaging delivers substantial environmental benefits, including a carbon footprint that is 85% lower than steel cans. The format utilizes up to 71% FSC-certified paper and supports multiple product varieties, such as shredded tuna, flakes, and chunks. Jealsa intends to bring the format to global markets under third-party brands as well as its own labels, including Rianxeira, Mare Aperto and Robinson Crusoe.
The global shelf-stable tuna market is projected to expand by 12% to 12.4 billion units by 2030, the companies noted.
Jealsa president Jesús M Alonso Escurís commented: “Through our collaboration with Tetra Pak, we’ve brought a game-changing packaging solution to market, combining their expertise in innovative formats with our long-standing heritage in high-quality seafood. Together, we are delivering a solution that responds to evolving consumer expectations”.
