Zur Muhlen Group, the German meat processing subsidiary of Premium Food Group, has announced it will close its Eberswalder manufacturing facility in Britz, Brandenburg.
The phased closure, expected to be completed by the end of February 2026, places approximately 500 jobs at risk. Zur Muhlen, which produces around 2 billion consumer packages annually, only acquired Eberswalder in 2023. The group stated that the Eberswalder brand will continue to be produced using existing recipes but will be relocated to other sites in the former East Germany.
According to the company, the German sausage market has faced significant challenges, including rising costs for energy, labour and logistics, alongside increased competition from lower-cost international suppliers. EWN Wurstspezialitaten, the unit operating the site, claimed that modernising the plant would require an investment in the “mid-double-digit million” range, which was deemed economically unjustifiable.
In a statement, EWN management said: “We explored all possibilities until the very end to preserve the Britz site […] Unfortunately, we had to conclude that there is no realistic prospect under the given economic conditions”.
Premium Food Group, formerly known as Tonnies, is one of Europe’s largest meat processors. The Britz plant previously generated a turnover of more than €100 million ($109 million).
