Rewe, the Cologne-based retail organisation, has entered into an agreement with Migros, the Swiss retail cooperative, to acquire up to 40 Tegut supermarket stores in a strategic move to strengthen its regional distribution network.
The contract covers branches situated in Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria. Tegut, the Fulda-based supermarket operator that specialises in organic food, currently maintains approximately 315 locations but has faced significant financial pressure, reportedly recording an operating loss of around 26 million CHF ($28.5 million) in 2025. Rewe intends to integrate the majority of the acquired outlets under its flagship Rewe banner, while a smaller portion will transition to the Penny discount format.
The transaction follows a competitive bidding process and marks the final stages of Migros’s withdrawal from the German market. Migros previously announced it had signed an agreement with Edeka, the German retail group, for the takeover of a substantial part of the Tegut business in Germany.
Rewe stated that the acquisition remains subject to approval from the Federal Cartel Office.
