Tribe Breweries, the Australian beverage producer, has acquired Gold Coast-based craft brewer Black Hops out of voluntary administration for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 2014 in Burleigh Heads, Black Hops entered voluntary administration in March 2024. Following an initial financial restructuring, it reportedly entered administration for a second time in July after an unsuccessful attempt at a private sale.
Under the terms of the transaction, Tribe Breweries will retain Black Hops’ primary production brewery in Biggera Waters and its original taproom in Burleigh Heads. The buyer will also keep 100% of the brand’s Queensland workforce and approximately 90% of its national positions.
Heath Baker, CEO of Tribe Breweries, said: “The acquisition represents a clean slate for Black Hops, with new management focusing on aligning operational costs, improving financial discipline, and long-term business viability”.
Black Hops joins Tribe Breweries’ existing brand portfolio, which includes Stockade Brew Co, Mornington Peninsula Brewery and gluten-free label Wilde Brewing Co. Tribe Breweries achieved Certified B Corporation status in August, and operates a primary manufacturing facility in Goulburn with an annual capacity of 30 million litres.
