Tyson Foods, the leading US meat firm, has announced the closure of a beef and pork facility in Emporia (KS) with the loss of over 800 jobs.
The decision to shut the facility comes as the size of the US cattle herd has fallen to its smallest size in decades, raising the cost of buying livestock, Reuters reports.
Since 2023, Tyson has closed a number of plants as part of efforts to make its operations more efficient. This includes a pork processing plant in Perry (IA) that was shuttered in June, and six chicken plants whose closure was announced in 2023.
The Emporia facility, which produces seasoned and marinated meats and ground beef, is expected to close around the middle of February.
