Tyson Foods, the leading US meat firm, has announced the closure of a pork processing plant in Perry, IA.
According to sources, the decision to permanently shutter the facility follows a number of other optimisations to its manufacturing network, including the closure of six chicken plants, in 2023. Reuters reports that the firm had recently been facing slowing demand for a number of its products.
“While this decision was not easy, it emphasizes our focus to optimize the efficiency of our operations to best serve our customers”, a company spokesperson is quoted as saying.
Only recently, Tyson Foods had announced a major expansion of its pork manufacturing capability with the opening of a $355 million facility in Bowling Green, KY for the production of bacon.
The Perry plant, which currently employs 1,276 staff, is expected to close on 28th June.
