Target, the US retail corporation, has expanded its logistics network with the launch of its newest and largest food distribution center in Thornton (CO).

Representing a $367 million investment, the 529,000 sq m temperature-controlled facility will service 129 stores across 11 states. The facility is expected to employ 383 Target team members and features 12 banana ripening rooms. According to Target, the facility will replenish locations up to two days faster, ensuring fresher products and more consistently stocked shelves.

The Thornton facility is Target’s ninth food distribution centre nationwide and its fourth to open in just three years. Crucially, it is the retailer’s first facility equipped with consolidation capabilities. A dedicated section will combine separate shipments from different vendors into fully loaded trucks, a system that reduces transportation volume and costs across the network while streamlining the unloading process at other locations.

Amy Probst, senior vice president of food and beverage supply chain, trade and transportation at Target, stated: “This is an investment in the future of food and beverages at Target. We’re advancing and expanding our fresh supply chain capabilities so that guests can rely on us for all their high-quality meals, snacks and seasonal treats”.
