True North Seafood, a subsidiary of Canadian seafood specialist Cooke, has announced plans to close a facility located in New Bedford, in the US state of Massachusetts.
True North Seafood, which acquired the New Bedford site as part of the 2020 acquisition of Mariner Seafood, said it would shift operations to its sister plant at Wanchese Fish Company in Virginia. According to sources, the decision was taken to optimize capacity at the Virginia unit and cold storage facility to better serve its customers.
True North Seafood’s New Bedford facility has a workforce of 94, comprising 58 permanent and 36 contract staff. It is expected to close by the end of May.
Founded in 1936, Wanchese Fish Company is defined as a leading supplier of seafood products in North America and Europe, with a product range including scallops, shrimp, oysters, crabs and fish.
