USA: Ben & Jerry’s enters GMO debate with Food Fight Fudge Brownie

Stated to be in support of its home state Vermont’s new labelling law on genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), Ben & Jerry’s has changed the name of its Chocolate Fudge Brownie to Food Fight Fudge Brownie.

Entering the GMO debate, Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s commented: “Vermonters want the right to know what’s in their food. Renaming Chocolate Fudge Brownie to Food Fight Fudge Brownie will help put some dough in the Food Fight Fund”.

According to Food Business News, sales of the ice cream flavour will benefit the state’s legal defence against the Grocery Manufacturers Association, which filed a complaint in the federal district court in Vermont to overturn the state’s law requiring the labelling of food produced with bioengineered ingredients.

Food Fight Fudge Brownie is said to contain chocolate ice cream mixed with fudge brownie pieces and a portion from each sale of the flavour will support Food Fight Fund Vermont through July.

This year, Ben & Jerry’s also announced plans to re-launch its line of flavours without GMO ingredients.
