Aldi, the Germany-based retail chain, has announced an expansion of its footprint in the US with the acquisition of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys chains as part of as part of a larger divestiture of Southeastern Grocers.
The deal includes 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi, making up 75% of the two chains’ grocery outlets.
In a press release, the company said some locations would be converted to Aldi stores after the acquisition, while others will continue operating under the Winn-Dixie and Harveys banners.
Commenting on the acquisition, Aldi CEO Jason Hart said: “Like ALDI, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the Southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come”.
“The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills”, he added. “The transaction supports our long-term growth strategy across the United States, including plans to add 120 new stores nationwide this year to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end”.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2024, subject to customary regulatory approvals. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
