Unilever has announced its results for Q4 2013, revealing overall sales growth of 4.1%, with 2.7% volume and 1.4% price. Results for the quarter were particularly strong in emerging markets, which saw an increase in sales growth of 8.4% and volume at 5.3%.
CEO Paul Polman said: “We have delivered another year of consistent underlying sales growth and margin expansion coupled with strong cash flow. This has been achieved despite significant economic headwinds and highly competitive markets and reflects the benefits of strong margin accretive innovations and active cost management”
Unilever further claimed that it finished the quarter ahead of its markets, with particular growth in personal and home care. It highlighted success in personal care with “strong performance” in global brands such a Dove, Tresemme and Sunsilk. There was also the successful launch of the Toni and Guy line in the US and the relaunch of Lux in Japan and China, the company said. Household products were also stated to have performed well, with fabric conditioners and cleaners up and the launch of new products in Brazil under the Cif and Domestos brands.
However, sales were said to be down in food and refreshments products, with relatively weak performance in categories such as spreads, soups and sauces, especially in developed markets.
