Tesco, the UK’s leading supermarket retailer, has announced plans to expand its convenience store footprint with the opening of 150 new Tesco Express outlets over the next three years.
The new openings are set to create 2,000 jobs and build on the existing Tesco Express network, which currently numbers over 2,700 stores.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the Tesco Express chain, the retailer also announced the opening of its newest outlet in Burnt Oak, northwest London, close to where the first ever Tesco store began trading in 1929.
Tesco managing director of UK stores Kevin Tindall commented: “I’m delighted that we have come full circle and returned to the street where it all began, with Jack Cohen’s first store in Burnt Oak. Burnt Oak has a special place in Tesco history, and we’re proud to be serving its local community once again – alongside thousands more across the country”.
