Saputo UK, a division of Canadian dairy company Saputo, has announced the closure of its Kirkby Malzeard creamery in North Yorkshire with the potential loss of 80 jobs.
Production will be relocated to another Saputo facility in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, where significant investment has reportedly been made to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
The Kirkby Malzeard cheesemaking facility was acquired in 2021 as part of Saputo’s purchase of Wensleydale Dairy Products.
In 2024, Saputo also closed several facilities in the USA as part of plans to revamp its cheese manufacturing network there.
The closure of the facility is schedule to take place in July following a consultation process with employees.
Other Saputo UK facilities, including a creamery in Davidstow, Cornwall and a butter, spreads and oils plant in Liverpool, are unaffected.
