Aldi, the German retail giant, has announced the launch of what it claims to be the UK’s first supermarket own-brand wine sold in paperboard bottles.
The bottles utilize Frugalpac’s Frugal Bottles technology, described as being produced from 94% recycled paperboard with a food-grade pouch housing the wine. The packaging is said to be fully recyclable and to weigh five times less than a standard glass bottle.
Frugalpac reported that substituting glass bottles with cardboard would allow Aldi to reduce its carbon footprint equivalent to driving around the planet nearly six times.
Commenting on the launch, Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet”.
“Our Buying Teams are continuously thinking of how we can evolve our ranges to offer greater value and greener choices”, she added. “We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change”.
The line comprises two South African wines, one a white made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes and the second a red Shiraz, both on sale for £7.99 ($10.19).
The new pack will be available in stores from Global Recycling Day (18th March).
