We are witnessing the continued growth of discount retailers across the world, in particular those that place own brands at the core of their business. What do you think this says about the future of private label?
Post-pandemic, retailer demand in the FMCG sector has evolved significantly, with an increased focus on flexibility, efficiency, and responsiveness. Retailers are now more focused on products that align with changing consumer priorities, such as health, sustainability, and convenience—trends that extend across all retail formats, including discounters. The pandemic has also accelerated digital adoption, driving a growing demand for innovative e-commerce solutions and enhanced supply chain transparency. Retailers are looking for partners who can quickly adapt to market changes, offer sustainable packaging options, and provide faster, more reliable delivery solutions. In this context, private label brands are well-positioned to meet evolving consumer behaviors, and this trend is set to continue. As consumers place more emphasis on healthy eating, convenient meal solutions, and sustainable products, private labels are uniquely equipped to respond swiftly. Unlike established national brands, private labels have the flexibility to adapt to emerging trends and offer tailored solutions that meet consumers’ immediate needs. Whether it’s providing healthier alternatives, eco-friendly cleaning products, or convenient meal options, private label brands allow retailers to stay ahead of the curve and keep up with shifting consumer preferences. According to NielsenIQ data commissioned by PLMA, private label continues to gain traction across Europe, with total sales reaching €352 billion in 2024—an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous year.
What other trends should retailers and private label suppliers capitalise on in 2025?
Ongoing trends such as vegan, plant-based, and organic products are prominently featured at the trade show, with an expanding range of sustainable food and non-food items. These trends underscore the industry’s potential to lead in creating a greener world. Sustainability is a key focus in PLMA’s Idea Supermarket, where numerous examples are on display, including sustainable packaging, eco-friendly growing methods, and responsible sourcing. These offerings provide ample inspiration for those interested in exploring and learning more about sustainable private label products.
