Gama spoke to Marina Calheiros, Event Coordinator, ahead of the latest edition of Lisbon Food Affair.
What are your expectations for Lisbon Food Affair 2025?
In line with our growth and internationalisation objectives, LFA 2025 is aiming to consolidate itself as one of the leading international trade fairs in the food and beverage sector, with an increase in the number of foreign exhibitors and international visitors, reinforcing Portugal’s role as a strategic hub in the food industry.
The 2025 edition is expected to further highlight emerging trends in the sector, including sustainability, domestic production and technological innovations. It will also strengthen its connection with the Horeca channel and the machinery and equipment sectors, promoting the participation of the main players in the sector, with integrated solutions that respond to the needs of professionals and the industry.
Amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures, how will food and drink brands be primed to succeed in 2025?
In 2025, food and beverage brands will need to adopt innovative, consumer-centric strategies to stand out from the crowd in the face of cost-of-living pressures. With families struggling with tight budgets, the key to success will be balancing affordability, perceived value and sustainability. Brands that are able to align innovation, affordability, sustainability and a deep understanding of consumer needs will be well-positioned to thrive, even in a challenging economic environment.
In addition, Portugal’s cultural heritage can be explored to create authentic products that combine tradition and modernity. Foods that celebrate regional flavours and embrace traditional recipes with an innovative twist will be best placed to succeed, especially in the Horeca channel, which continues to be an important driver of the food economy in Portugal.
What other key trends do you expect to shape food and drink innovation in 2025?
In 2025, innovation in the food and beverage sector will be driven by global trends that reflect changing consumer preferences and economic and environmental challenges. In Portugal, these trends will be influenced by gastronomic culture and the socio-economic context.
The Portuguese market will see a growing focus on valuing local and seasonal ingredients, strengthening the connection with gastronomic heritage. Products such as artisanal olive oils, organic wines and reinterpreted traditional foods, such as gourmet preserves, will take centre stage. Portuguese consumers will value brands that promote fresh and ethically sourced products even more.
Another major trend that is here to stay and shape the future is automation and artificial intelligence (AI) in food. From meals prepared based on consumer preferences to the use of AI to optimize supply chains, technology will be essential to ensure innovation and efficiency.
