Migros, the leading Swiss grocery retailer, is expanding in the healthcare space with the acquisition of the Topwell pharmacy chain via its subsidiary MedBase.
Topwell is described as Switzerland’s oldest pharmacy chain and operates a network of 42 stores in the German-speaking part of the country. Its product range includes healthcare and beauty items alongside infant nutrition and other related products.
Migros said it intended to combine the MedBase and Topwell businesses in order to create cost-effective, integrated pharmacies and medical centres operating under one roof.
Commenting on the move, Medbase CEO Marcel Napierala said: “We are planning and implementing new ideas, together with all relevant partners, that meet consumer needs and are oriented to future market developments. We are bringing together healthcare professionals in an efficient way, at the right time and in the right place”.
