Nestle, the consumer goods giant, has announced it is investing €15 million ($16 million) at a plant in Girona, Spain to begin production of recyclable packaging for Nescafe instant coffee and Nescafe Dolce Gusto coffee capsules.
The investment will enable the local production of refill bags for Nescafe instant coffee, ranging in size from 75g to 275g, which Nestle claims weigh 97% less than conventional glass jars.
Nestle is also constructing a high-speed production line for new mono-material Nescafe single-serve sachets, which is anticipated to reduce virgin plastic use by 60 tonnes annually. The new line will produce 1,200 sachets per minute for both retail and foodservice.
Operational since 1968, the Girona plant employs over 900 people and exports 75% of its Nescafe Dolce Gusto capsule production and 84% of its instant coffee. Construction of the new packaging lines is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
