According to undisclosed sources, German FMCG retailer Kaufland is planning to expand its business by entering the Serbian market.
Quoting undisclosed sources of Lebensmittel Zeitung, ESM is reporting that Kaufland is searching for national representatives in Serbia in order to set up a regional subsidiary. In doing so it is following in the footsteps of Lidl – which, like Kaufland, is part of the Schwarz group – which is expected to start the construction of its first supermarkets in at least 15 towns in Serbia in the second half of 2014.
Kaufland most recently expanded into Bulgaria in 2006. In Central and Eastern Europe it also currently operates in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.
Kaufland officials have reportedly declined to comment on the speculation.
