Greenyard, the leading Belgian fruit and vegetable processor, has announced it has acquired Gigi Gelato, a start-up firm based in the Netherlands that produces dairy-free Italian-style ice cream.
Gigi Gelato, which is in sold in European markets, is a pure-plant product that provides an answer to today’s consumer search for healthier alternatives in indulgence products like ice-cream, Greenyard said in a statement. The product is currently availabe in Strawberry Blueberry & Beetroot, Mango Passionfruit & Fennel, and Ginger Orange & Carrot varieties.
The company added that it would use its relationships with retailers and foodservice partners as a springboard for further commercial development in the frozen plant-based ice cream category.
Commenting on the acquisition Kobe Vanhaecke, Belgium commercial director at Greenyard Frozen, stated: “This is an important step in our journey to market innovative and convenient products that stimulate the consumption of fruit and vegetables. By expanding our frozen product range, we can now provide broader market availability for this revolutionary pure-plant product innovation”.
