Discount retailer Lidl has announced that the company is investing €70 million ($77 million) to open a regional headquarters in Sardinia that will also host the companys’s 12th logistics centre in Italy.
In a press release, Lidl sai the new facility, which is located in Assemini in the Cagliari region, will shorten the distance goods need to travel to supply the retailer’s 23 stores on the island, providing environmental and efficiency benefits.
The new facility is said to be part of a six-month corporate growth path that includes an investment of €400 million ($444 million) to open 40 more stores in Italy.
Massimiliano Silvestri, president of Lidl Italy. commented: “We are immensely proud to inaugurate the Assemini Regional Headquarters today. We have brought to fruition this singular project with great determination in light of the strategic importance it has for us and for the Sardinian community”.
The logistics centre extends over an area of more than 37,000 sq m and is expected to start operating at the start of October.
