Henkell, the German subsidiary of the Dr. Oetker group specializing in wines and spirits, has announced the acquisition of 50.67% of the shares Spanish firm Freixenet, in a move that is claimed will create the world’s leading sparkling wine group.
Henkell said the companies respective portfolios and international presence would “complement each other perfectly”.
“While Freixenet stands for the world’s leading cava brand, Henkell’s Mionetto Prosecco is the world’s leading Prosecco and Henkell Trocken is Germany’s most exported sparkling wine”, the firm noted in a statement, adding that the deal would enable the combined company to explore new markets and distribution channels.
Commenting on the move, Henkell CEO Dr Andreas Brokemper said: “Henkell and Freixenet share a strong entrepreneurial vision. We are delighted to realize as partners the opportunities of the globally growing sparkling wine market. Together, we can offer our customers not only global expertise but also a unique range of first-class brands and specialties”.
