French retailer Auchan has announced the opening of it first store in Algeria, with doors expected to open in Q4 of this year.
In a press release, Auchan said the expansion to Algeria, which is the third country that the group has entered in Africa after Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire, has been made possible through a global partnership with the Great Way Group, a major player in the retail sector in the country.
Commenting on the move, Yves Claude, chairman and CEO of Auchan Retail, said: “To continue and expand our development in Africa, we are entering into a responsible partnership with one of Algeria’s leading retailers. We share a three-fold ambition: offering residents a novel shopping experience; offering them products that are good for their health and for the planet; and contributing to Algeria’s development, as far as we can, by encouraging the creation of agricultural value chains and local food production”.
The first store, a 5000 sq mt hypermarket in Algiers, is intended as a potential precursor to further expansion across Algeria.
