Supermarket chain Continente, part of Portuguese retail and telecoms conglomerate Sonae, has announced the opening of a new store concept, Continente Labs.
According to sources, it takes five seconds to buy something in the new 150 sq. mt. store, as the store is scan-less and cashier-less and the purchases are made through the Continente Labs app. The store is equipped with around 230 cameras on the ceiling and over 400 shelf sensors which control all items that the customer is purchasing.
To enter the store, it is necessary to download the Continente Labs app on a smartphone, and have a debit or credit card associated and the billing data to issue the electronic receipt. At the entrance, the costumer should scan the QR code generated by Continente Labs, then, there is complete freedom of movement through the store, so customers can pick and choose the desired products and then just leave the store.
Frederico Santos, director of innovation and digital transformation at Sonae MC, said: “This is another pioneering experience by Continente, under development since 2019, which allows the strengthening of the relationship between brand and consumer and transforming the shopping journey into something even faster, more efficient and with the minimum possible contacts, always in safety”.
The first scan-less and cashier-less store in Europe opened on 26th May 2021 in the centre of Lisbon.
