USA: Coca-Cola to finally close Massachusetts bottling plant

Coca-Cola, the global beverage giant, is set to finally close its bottling facility in Northampton (MA) by the end of this year.

The planned closure will result in the layoff of 175 workers, with the job cuts expected to take place in August and November. The Northampton plant is responsible for producing the company’s non-carbonated beverages, including juices and teas such as Minute Maid and Powerade. The closure had been planned since 2021 but the decision was pushed back from its original 2023 target.

A company spokesperson stated: “While employees have been aware of these plans for some time, the company is issuing formal notices now to provide as much advance notice as possible”. They added: “The company is committed to supporting employees through this transition, including working closely with the state to identify new job opportunities.”

The decision follows other network adjustments, including plans announced in April last year to close a bottling facility in American Canyon (CA). In its most recently reported quarterly results, Coca-Cola posted net revenues of $12.5 billion, a 12% increase year-over-year.
