Japanese food major Calbee, via its US subsidiary, has announced that it has acquired a 58% stake in US tofu and plant-based food producer Hodo.
As part of the venture, Sagamiya Foods, a leading Japanese tofu producer, has acquired a minority stake in Hodo and will provide technical support to reinforce its growth plans.
Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Oakland, California, Hodo is a leading US tofu producer, offering tofu, yuba and other plant-based foods made from organic, non-GMO soybeans.
Commenting on the move, Calbee CEO Makoto Ehara said: “As demand for sustainable foods grows, tofu is increasingly valued by health-conscious consumers. With its high plant-based protein content and minimal processing, tofu is drawing particular attention in the U.S. market, where health and environmental concerns are driving growth. Our vision at Calbee is to build a global portfolio of foods that are enjoyable and meaningful. The addition of Hodo to the Calbee Group marks an important step in strengthening our Health and Food businesses as well as expanding our global presence”.
Hodo founder Minh Tsai added: “Hodo’s foods are protein-rich, packed with nutrients and made with high-quality ingredients. We blend tradition and innovation to create foods for consumers who are looking for healthier options but don’t want to compromise on taste. We are excited for Calbee’s vision and their commitment to offer better-for-you foods to consumers”.
