KP Snacks, the UK-based snacking subsidiary of Intersnack, has announced proposals to close its Tyrrells production facility in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, alongside the discontinuation of the brand’s vegetable crisp range.
The manufacturer stated that the move follows a “sustained decline in demand” for the vegetable-based snacks and a significant loss in “key export volumes”. The Uttoxeter site is dedicated to the production of non-potato lines, which primarily include crisps made from parsnips, beetroot and carrots.
According to the company, a formal consultation process with employees is now underway. A spokesperson for KP Snacks commented: “While no final decisions have been made, we appreciate this is an uncertain time for our colleagues at Uttoxeter, and we are supporting them throughout the consultation process. Should the proposal progress, we will explore any ways to reduce or avoid redundancies where possible”.
The company emphasised that its core Tyrrells potato crisp portfolio is not affected by the proposal and “continues to perform strongly”. KP Snacks, which also owns brands such as McCoy’s, Hula Hoops, and Butterkist, originally acquired the Herefordshire-founded Tyrrells business from Hershey in 2018. At the time of a previous sale in 2008, the brand was valued at £40 million ($51 million).
