West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union (WAMUL), known for its Purabi Dairy brand, has officially entered the Barak Valley region of Assam with the inauguration of a renovated milk processing plant in Silchar. Located at Gungoor, the facility represents the first major foray of organised cooperative dairying into the southern part of the state.

The plant was refurbished and upgraded in less than 10 months by IDMC Ltd, a subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Managed by North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL)—a joint venture between the NDDB and the Assam government—the facility has an initial processing capacity of 20,000 litres per day (LPD). Approximately 100 million INR ($1.2 million) was invested to bring the previously defunct plant back into operation.

Purabi Dairy is launching its Purabi Plus fresh pouch milk in the region, with 250ml and 500ml packs to be made available. The plant’s broader product portfolio is expected to include curd, lassi, paneer and ghee.

NDDB chairman Meenesh Shah commented: “The starting of this processing facility at Silchar paves the way for setting up a producer organisation to strengthen milk procurement systems in Barak Valley to benefit dairy farmers in the region”.
