The Tofoo Co, the UK’s leading organic tofu manufacturer, has agreed to acquire Topas, the German seitan producer best known for its Wheaty brand, for an undisclosed sum.
The transaction, backed by The Tofoo Co’s private equity owner Comitis Capital, marks the UK company’s first major international acquisition and is designed to “anchor” its expansion into mainland Europe. Topas, founded in 1993 by Klaus Gaiser and Sanni Ikola-Gaiser, is based near Stuttgart and specializes in organic seitan products such as sausages, deli slices, and ready-to-cook formats. The company employs over 100 people and reported a turnover of €14 million ($15.2 million) in its most recent financial year.
David Knibbs, CEO of The Tofoo Co, commented: “Wheaty has an exceptional heritage and reputation within organic plant-based products. We see huge potential to build on this strong base, grow the brand further across Europe and introduce exciting new opportunities in the UK. This partnership also gives us strong roots in Germany as we bring The Tofoo Co to the market”.
The deal is expected to close later in February 2026. Topas will continue to operate from its existing site in Germany. Sebastian von Eltz has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Topas, while founders Klaus and Miikka Gaiser will remain involved in product development and production roles respectively.
Felix Jauch, Principal at Comitis Capital, described the acquisition as “highly strategic,” noting that Topas’s manufacturing capabilities in seitan complement The Tofoo Co’s existing expertise in tofu and tempeh.
