Auchan, the French retail group owned by the Mulliez family, has announced plans to convert nearly 300 of its supermarkets in mainland France into stores operated under the Intermarche and Netto banners by the end of 2026.
Under the plan, the supermarkets – currently operated by Auchan Retail – will be run under a franchise agreement with Intermarche / Mousquetaires, with Auchan establishing a dedicated legal entity to manage the transition. While the storefront branding and merchandise sourcing will shift to Intermarche or Netto, the real estate, business licences and employment contracts will remain with Auchan.
In a statement, Auchan said the move formed part of a broader alliance with Mousquetaires for purchasing and supply operations, intended to leverage Intermarche’s pricing competitiveness and supermarket expertise, and provide “value for clients and prospects for staff.” The group said the shift could allow supermarkets to reduce prices by around 6-8%.
The transformation concerns 261 integrated supermarkets and 33 franchised units. The project remains subject to approval by competition authorities before it can take effect.
This development marks a further step in Auchan’s restructuring and follows the alliances and store transfers triggered by its 2024 plan to shed loss-making formats.
