Fazer, the leading Finnish bakery and confectionery firm, has invested €11 million ($12.5 million) in a new state-of-the-art rye bread line to expand production capacity at its Lahti facility.

Founded in 1891, Fazer is one of Finland’s largest food industry corporations, with facilities in Vantaa, Lahti, and Lappeenranta. The company operates 139 in-store bakeries within grocery shops and employs approximately 1,600 people, including 450 at its Lahti bakery.

The new production line, which became operational in April, enables the production of up to 25,000 Reissumies rye breads per hour. Running entirely on green energy, it will reportedly help to reduce CO₂ emissions at the Lahti bakery by 30%. The company also plans to replace an existing line with a more sustainable electric version.

Commenting on the move, Fazer Bakery Finland managing director Marko Bergholm said: “We want to expand our offering with attractive and healthy rye products and increase domestic bread production. In Finland, we bake from 100% domestic grain”.
