Brazil: Grupo Piracanjuba acquires cheese manufacturer Basel Lacteos

Grupo Piracanjuba, one of Brazil’s largest dairy companies, has announced the acquisition of Basel Lacteos, a specialist producer of premium cheeses based in the state of Minas Gerais.

The transaction involves the takeover of Basel’s manufacturing facility in Antonio Carlos, a municipality in the Serra da Mantiqueira region known for its high-quality milk production. The deal increases Piracanjuba’s industrial footprint to ten units across Brazil and reinforces its presence in the higher-avalue dairy segment. Basel Lácteos, a family-owned business with over 50 years of history, produces a range of cheeses including emmental, gruyere, maasdam, and gouda.

Luiz Claudio Lorenzo, president of Grupo Piracanjuba, commented: “Our priority is to preserve what Basel has built so far. For the future, the expectation is to gradually expand the portfolio and productive capacity of the plant”.

While Básel currently focuses its distribution in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Piracanjuba stated that it plans to expand the commercialisation of the products nationwide under the Piracanjuba brand. The acquisition follows a period of significant inorganic growth for the group, which acquired Northeast-based dairy firm Natulact in May 2025.

The completion of the transaction is subject to approval by anti-trust authorities. Until a final decision is reached, both companies will continue to operate independently.
