Agrana, the Austrian food group, has announced that it is acquiring Mercator-Emba, a leading Slovenian food producer serving the food service sector, processors, and retailers, from Croatian food processor and retailer Fortenova Group.
Mercator-Emba produces items such as BenQuick instant cocoa and Sladki Greh dessert toppings. Employing around 100 people in Slovenia, the company generated approximately €30 million ($35 million) in its 2024 financial year.
Commenting on the move, Fortenova Groupchief executive officer and member of the board of directors Fabris Perusko said: “Fortenova Group has been actively reshaping its portfolio to focus on key activities that deliver products and services directly to end consumers. In that context, we firmly believe that Agrana is the right environment for Mercator Emba, a strong and successful company known for the exceptional quality of its products and its role as a reliable supplier to some of the most prominent companies on the EU market”.
Agrana CEO Stephan Buttner added: ““Acquiring Mercator-Emba gives AGRANA access to additional distribution markets and new customer segments in the growing food service sector. This fits perfectly into our portfolio as part of our NEXT LEVEL corporate strategy, in which profitable growth in the business unit Food & Beverage Solutions is a core element”.
The transaction is subject to approval by competition and regulatory authorities.
