Eridania, the Italian sugar and sweetener business owned by France’s Cristal Union, is investing €20 million ($22 million) to upgrade its facility in Russi, Ravenna.
The investment forms part of a broader strategy to improve supply chain efficiency and accelerate expansion in the sweetener segment. Approximately 75% of the total funds (around €15 million / $16.7 million) will be allocated to a new 10,000 sq m logistics hub, replacing the current platform in Cervia by early 2028. The site will become the sole entry point into Italy for French sugar imported from Cristal Union and will serve as the hub for packaging and domestic distribution.
The remaining 25% will fund the expansion and in-housing of sweetener processing operations, bringing production directly to the Russi site. The overall plan aims to generate annual savings of €1.5 million ($1.7 million) and increase distributed volumes by 20% within three years, moving from 320 to 400 million tonnes.
Eridania CEO Alessio Bruschetta commented: “This investment represents a key step in Eridania’s evolution strategy. The new Russi hub will be the heart of the group’s Italian logistics and will represent a strategic asset with the ambition of becoming one of the main sugar logistics hubs in the Mediterranean area”.
