Gay Lea Foods, the Canadian dairy co-operative owned by approximately 1,200 dairy farmer members, has announced an investment of over C$200 million ($146 million) to expand its Clayson Road manufacturing facility in Toronto.
The project marks the first major milestone in the co-operative’s approximately C$450-million ($329 million) Network for Growth strategy, a multi-year investment to strengthen and modernise its Canadian manufacturing network. Designed to address a national cottage cheese shortage and expand capacity across its growing high-protein dairy portfolio, the expansion will introduce advanced processing technology and modern manufacturing capabilities to increase production capacity, strengthen productivity and enhance operational flexibility.
Suzanna Dalrymple, president and CEO of Gay Lea Foods, stated: “This investment reflects our confidence in the future of Canadian dairy and in Gay Lea Foods’ role in helping shape it. That future will be built on Canadian dairy farms and in modern processing facilities equipped to respond to evolving consumer preferences”.
Scheduled for completion in 2028, the expansion will create up to 75 new positions at the facility.
