Japan Tobacco Inc, the tobacco manufacturer has announced that its subsidiary JT Group signed an agreement on the 22nd July 2026 to acquire the trademarks and related intellectual property rights for the European Union and Switzerland of fine cut tobacco brands BREAK and Moro from Scandinavian Tobacco Group A/S (STG) for €176 million (¥32.6 billion / $191 million).
The transaction is expected to be completed within 2026, subject to receiving all necessary regulatory clearances. The acquisition will be funded through JT Group’s existing cash reserves and will not have any material impact on the company’s consolidated financial performance for the 2026 fiscal year.
According to JT Group, the deal aligns with its overarching tobacco strategy by improving return on investment within the combustibles category, which will in turn support investments in reduced-risk products and ensure sustainable profit growth over the medium to long term. The addition of BREAK and Moro is intended to complement JT Group’s existing fine cut portfolio while strengthening its business foundation in its Western Europe cluster.
Gian Luigi Cervesato, JTI’s Regional President, Western Europe, commented: “The acquisition of BREAK and Moro fully aligns with our tobacco business strategy and reflects our disciplined approach to driving sustainable growth over the medium to long term. By strengthening our Combustibles portfolio, we are reinforcing our position in a key region and advancing our growth ambitions, while supporting continued investments in reduced risk Products”.
