Tabaqueira, the largest Portuguese tobacco manufacturer, has been selected by its parent company, Philip Morris International (PMI), to house its new generative artificial intelligence (AI) factory, reinforcing the country’s role as a strategic hub for innovation and technology within the group.

According to the company, the new AI operation will be based at Tabaqueira’s plant in Albarraque and will serve PMI’s global operations from Portugal. Directed by Tomi Virkki, head of the PMI AI Factory, the operation will coordinate an international team of engineers dedicated to developing and implementing generative AI solutions. The AI Factory will feature its own PMI team focused on leadership and operations, complemented by an implementation partner providing scalable specialized knowledge.

Depending on the needs of the project, the operation could involve around 100 specialists. The mission of the facility is to drive the development of AI tools and applications across PMI’s different business areas globally, ranging from industrial process optimization to the personalization of consumer experiences.

Through this decision, Tabaqueira also plans to deepen partnerships with national universities and companies to promote a more robust, innovative, and competitive technological ecosystem in Portugal.

Tomi Virkki stated: “The creation of the AI Factory in Portugal represents a milestone in PMI’s technological transformation. We are bringing together cutting-edge talent and knowledge to develop generative artificial intelligence solutions that will have a global impact on various areas of our business.”
