Valio, the Finnish dairy and food group, has announced plans to relocate production from its factory in Oulu to its manufacturing facilities in Riihimaki, Jyvaskyla and Joensuu. According to the company, the proposal follows declining production volumes at the Oulu plant and an increase in general operating costs. If implemented, the plan would result in the closure of production at the Oulu facility.
The Oulu factory produces fresh dairy products, including milk and fermented milk, alongside plant-based semi-finished products and ice cream. Valio intends to maintain its distribution warehouse, sales, and support functions on the Oulu premises.
Change negotiations involving 264 employees are scheduled to begin on 25 May 2026 based on production, financial, and operational reorganisational grounds. Under the current plan, which would see production phased out by the end of the first half of 2028, up to 140 roles could be impacted.
This move continues the company’s efforts to consolidate its domestic manufacturing network, which included an October 2024 announcement to shut its Vantaa plant and relocate operations to Joensuu.
