Kraft Heinz, the US-based food producer, has announced a proposal to consolidate its New Zealand manufacturing operations in a move intended to improve efficiency and competitiveness. The restructure involves several facilities and product categories across the country.
Under the proposal, the company intends to move its nutritional pouch production from its King Street facility in Hastings to its existing site in Echuca, Australia. Additionally, pet food manufacturing currently located at the Frederick Street site in Hastings would be consolidated into the King Street factory.
The company also plans to phase out several product categories and brands, including the closure of three manufacturing sites. These include its Auckland plant, which produces dips under the Mediterranean, Just Hummus and Good Taste Company labels, its Dunedin coffee factory (Gregg’s and Cerebos brands), and its Christchurch frozen vegetable facility. Packing operations for frozen lines at the King Street site in Hastings are also slated to cease.
Commenting on the announcement, Heinz Wattie’s Managing Director Neil Heffer said: “These changes are about ensuring we have the right manufacturing footprint to remain competitive and continue to invest in our iconic brands and people in New Zealand”.
